When life is lacking in excitement, when goals are unmet and results unsatisfactory the prescription should always be repositioning our leadership. I do not want to go into the boring definition of leadership as proposed by the pundits but I will just say that leadership is action nothing short of that. Any action that takes you progressively from point A to B is leadership. I have seen many gifted and well educated folks who are just stuck. Alot of times we seem to proposed a long list of doable's for them. But stagnation in life and business has an antidote which is leadership.
Businesspeople are mostly familiar with how leadership changes everything. Oftentimes when organisations and corporations are falling below goals there is a clarion call for leadership change. It is believe that the growth of an organisation is pro rata to the leadership competent. This approach to organisational crisis resolution is what I have christen 'Shifting Leadership' as opposed to 'faithful leadership' which is holding on to the same team that brought the company to a stand still and believing in them to work it out.
SHIFTING LEADERSHIP
Changing leaders in response to unmet goals hoping that the new leader will produce expected results and when she doesn't a new one comes on and so on is a fad in today corporate world. This may have its merits and also demerits but if people who have been the source of a company 'success' and 'failure' are retrenched for fresh hands and minds I am of the opinion that a very valuable asset has been lost. Now, you must know that every crisis is golden and those in it will definitely learn much. Leaders should be change if the issues are related to integrity. Integrity shouldn't be compromise. If is competent a more competent leader wouldn't be a bad move but leaders shouldn't go because the company is struggling as a result of weak economy. More training, external coaching and maybe some month break for the leader to go and reinvigorate herself would be fantastic. Curbing inefficiency in leadership needs vision, alot of motivation and timing. All great leaders are embodiment of all three. Every organization should seek the kind of leaders that will establish a culture of excellence. This will form part of the vision. Instilling excellence in an organization is a big move which will come handy when toughest times roar. Vision should answer five basic questions of : Where, When, Why, How, and Who. Motivation is what beats the competition. Self motivated leaders are highly passionate about their work. They are concern about the product and service they rendered and how to improve it. Take the late Steve Jobs for example. Steve jobs was one of America greatest business leader. He was self motivated little wonder Apple never experienced any down times with him. Mood affects everything. And as brain science as reviewed mood is contagious. The leader mood will sooner or later become the organization mood. Timing is doing the right thing at the right time. Many businesses, organization and nations have experienced turmoil because their leaders did not observe this principle. A good plan is never enough it must be executed at the right time.
FINAL WORD
Find what works for your organization and stick to it because nobody changes the winning team. If the evils besetting your organization requires 'shifting leadership' or 'faithful leadership' you are at liberty to do as you please but always make the right choice not the convenience choice.
