Today post is dedicated to Roberta Vinci. I arrived at this decision after watching her semi finals game with world number one seed Serena Williams. The semi finals game was to me the most epic game of the tournament. When an underdog trumps a world champion in sports I am often over the moon because a lots of lessons can be extracted from it. Firstly, Roberta Vinci is an Italian who was up against an American in American soil and in front of Americans. The odds were definitely against her but she was her own fan. I do not know what she was thinking but I see this new tennis sensation as a champion. During that game everyone in the court were all rooting for Serena who obviously was the favorite.
Roberta Vinci didn't care. She was firm and strong. She play like a champion that day putting Serena in a position of weakness. This calls to mind a very important lesson in leadership and success. You must be your own fan and cheerleader, even when others give you no chance at success. Don't be obsess with your flaws, weakness and mistakes everybody including the most successful people aren't infallible. Your self esteem is as important as your physical beauty, wealth or career. Never allow humiliation to creep inside your heart just because you made a mistake. Allowing your confidence to evaporate because others withdrew their support is a tragedy. Strong and accomplished leaders in all fields never offered themselves to shame or defeat just because other people are not providing them with kudos. Yes kudos from friends, and associates are good nevertheless you must find your life, you must be ready to go alone, you must believe in yourself and aspirations even when the world is too busy to acknowledge you. See, what ever you do is a work in progress. keep improving and fine-toning your capacity. Believing in yourself is a job for you alone. For you to do this job effectively you must love, respect and appreciate yourself. Nobody will do it for you. Like Maxwell maltz counseled if you make friend with yourself you will never be alone. Make yourself your best friend. Humility is one virtue you will need to become your own fan. Everyone does make mistakes so when you are criticize for your mistakes don't run off the cliff its just the way the world helps us to know what to improve about ourselves. You are great, you are beautiful, you are a champion. Next time when you are not getting the cheers and your competitor is getting all the cheers just unleash your inner 'Roberta Vinci'
