As i sit on my desk writing this morning i remember a story i heard over a radio this week. The story was about Stephanie Ritter a 26 year old college graduate who tries to sell her college diploma on ebay for $50,000- after failing to find a job after 4 years of graduation from Florida state university. The 26 year old said that the pricey degree and the four years spent acquiring it haven't helped her get a job. She also offer to give the would-be buyer free campus tour and access to her facebook memories. The questions on my mind are what is the worth of a college degree? Is a degree for getting job or should be for creating jobs?
Honestly I am in touch with Stephanie Ritter plights. She like millions of young people in Africa hopes for having a great working life upon graduation but many finds that dream too far from happening. I am of the opinion that 21st century education needs a revamp and students needs new tools and information to become successful. The education we have today was designed for the industrial era but with the information era today with its overwhelming population new jobs need to be created. Our education system do not encourage job creation but job seeking. Teaching young people how to get a job will only spell doom for the world. Business writers like Robert Kiyosaki has been in the forefront for years advocating for money education in our school curriculum and today I join him in saying kids from poor and middle income families should be taught about money and business while in school and not just calculus. During my undergraduate days i was summoned to give a talk once in a seminar organized by an NGO called STRAT UP NIGERIA. I remember I talked about personal leadership. I told the group which was made up of students that emphasis should be on personal development that is the capacity to think, write, lead and speak in public. I also told the group that the pursuit of B.Sc should culminates with self development. I am of the opinion that the greatest skill and capacity a man can get is the capacity to think. Thinking release geniuses. It gives ideas and through ideas we can create jobs not just for ourselves but for others . Success flows from thoughts and leadership is about the capacity to think. When young people are trained on how to solve differential equations or how to balance chemical equations without developing capacity on how also to solve problems which will confront them later in life then more degree's will be offer for sale.
African leaders need more of these article. pass on the message.
